"It is not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste much of it."
-Seneca
It is not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste much of it. Life is long enough, and a sufficiently generous amount has been given to us for the highest achievements if it were all well invested. But when it is squandered in heedless luxury and spent on no good activity, we are forced at last by death's final constraint to realize that it has passed away before we knew it was passing.
True happiness is... to do what is right, to fulfill our duties honestly, to keep our promises, and to live in harmony with reason and nature. For a life without virtue is but a shadow, a house without a foundation.
Begin at once to live, and count each separate day as a separate life. Life is long if you know how to use it well. Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one.
